AutoRecover is a very important feature in Microsoft Office programmes. This can save your work in the case of Office crashing, or if your computer shuts down unexpectedly before you have a chance to save your work.

Saving your work with a relevant name in a logical location as soon as you begin working is one of the most important stages in creating a document, as AutoRecover may not save temporary backups if the document is not assigned a save location to begin with. This may mean losing hours of precious work in the event of interruption.

AutoRecover in Microsoft Office programmes saves a temporary version of the file you are working on, which can be loaded in the event of the software closing without you having the chance to save your work.

The process to adjust the AutoRecover time is the same for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher, though the example we are using is on Microsoft Word. Below is a guide to adjusting the AutoRecover time on both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Click here to skip to the Mac OS version

Windows

Open a new Microsoft Word document and click on the ‘File’ tab in the top left.

Click on ‘Options’ at the bottom of the left-hand navigation bar.

Open the ‘Save’ tab.

Change the AutoRecover time value to your preferred number of minutes. We recommend having an AutoRecover every 1 minute.

This will now be the default setting for all new documents for this user on this computer.

Mac

Open a new Microsoft Word document and click ‘Word’ on the left of the upper taskbar.

Click on preferences, then select the save icon.

Change the number of the AutoRecover time at the bottom of the window. We recommend having it set at 1 minute.

This will now be the default setting for all new documents for this user on this computer.
